• Clean drinking water in Baghdad

"I must thank you very much, without you I could not open my business." - Mohammed started a small business for water purification in his hometown Baghdad.

Clean drinking water is not a matter of course in Baghdad. Especially small children and elderly or sick people are dependent on clean water. This is Mohammed Aljibori's concern. In 2015 he left Iraq for Germany, learned the German language and gained many new experiences. But since his entire family still lives in Iraq, Mohammed decided to return home after four years in Germany.

After this decision Mohammed started his training with our StartHope@Home program. The trained refrigeration engineer started very motivated and already had a concrete idea in his head: He would like to optimize the drinking water supply in Baghdad through water treatment. With a water purification plant he wants to turn river water into drinking water and offer it to private customers as well as companies. In addition, he wants to make his business sustainable through a rental and reuse system for the water canisters.

Together with our Hamburg coach, Mohammed worked for several weeks on the detailed design of his business idea and finally had a finished business plan in his hands. Supported by the returnee counselling service reveno Care e.V. he returned to Baghdad in April 2019.

In addition to the concept development, Mohammed's challenge was to find a water treatment plant that he could finance with his small budget. With the help of a support programme for business founders returning to their countries of origin, he was able to buy a small plant that cleans 500 litres of water per hour.

"I must also thank you very much, without you I could not open my business." Even though his business has got off to a very good start and he has been able to develop a customer base, it is not yet profitable enough for Mohammed to make a living. For this he needs a more powerful plant that can clean considerably more litres per hour.

In order to support Mohammed in his search for follow-up financing, we have hired a business trainer in Baghdad to assist him in his further steps. In addition, Mohammed visited the GIZ migration advisory centre in Baghdad and hopes for further support there. The StartHope@Home team and our partners from Reveno Care e.V. remain in close contact with Mohammed to support him in the further development of his water treatment business.
